Bharmour, the ancient capital of the Chamba district, is a land steeped in mythology and natural beauty. Often called “Shiv Bhumi” (Land of Lord Shiva), it offers a unique blend of cultural heritage and serene landscapes.
This is the heart of Bharmour, a cluster of 84 ancient temples believed to have been built around the 7th century AD. The Manimahesh Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva) and the Lakshana Devi Temple (the oldest in the complex with intricate wooden carvings) are must-sees.
Bharmour served as the capital of the Chamba kingdom for about 400 years, making it a historically significant site with well-preserved ancient architecture.
Bharmour is the primary base for the arduous but spiritually rewarding trek to Manimahesh Lake, considered one of Lord Shiva’s abodes. Pilgrims often halt here before or after their yatra.
Located a short trek (or drive) of about 4 km from Bharmour, this temple dedicated to Goddess Bharmani offers panoramic views and is considered a prerequisite visit for those undertaking the Manimahesh pilgrimage.
Bharmour is the homeland of the semi-nomadic Gaddi tribe, known for their unique culture, traditional attire, and shepherding lifestyle. You might encounter them with their flocks in and around Bharmour.
Nestled in the Budhil Valley, Bharmour is surrounded by the majestic Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar mountain ranges, offering stunning views and a tranquil atmosphere.
Besides the Manimahesh trek, Bharmour serves as a starting point for other less strenuous treks, allowing exploration of the surrounding valleys and villages.
For nature enthusiasts, the Kugti Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the largest in Himachal Pradesh, is located near Bharmour and is home to diverse flora and fauna.
