Well-maintained highways connect Himachal from surrounding states. From Delhi, Shimla is 343 km via NH44 (8-9 hours), Manali is 540 km via NH1 and NH3 (12 hours), and Dharamshala is 480 km via NH44 (10 hours). Regular HRTC and private buses operate from Delhi, Chandigarh and nearby cities, with comfortable Volvo services available for overnight journeys.
While Himachal has limited rail connectivity, the scenic Kalka-Shimla toy train (UNESCO World Heritage) is a popular option. Major railheads include Pathankot (for Dharamshala), Chandigarh (for Shimla/Manali), and Una (direct trains from Delhi). Overnight trains from Delhi to these stations are most convenient.
The state has three main airports - Bhuntar Airport near Manali, Gaggal Airport serving Dharamshala, and Shimla's Jubbarhatti Airport. For better connectivity, travelers often fly to Chandigarh Airport (4-5 hours from Shimla) or Delhi Airport (6-8 hours from Manali) and continue by road.
