Believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, the lake and the towering Manimahesh Kailash peak overlooking it hold deep spiritual importance for Hindus, particularly the Gaddi tribe.
This annual pilgrimage during August/September attracts thousands of devotees who undertake a challenging trek to seek blessings with a holy dip in the lake.
Situated at an altitude of approximately 13,500 feet (4,100 meters), the lake is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and fed by glacial meltwater, offering pristine and awe-inspiring scenery.
On clear days, the reflection of the majestic Manimahesh Kailash peak in the lake’s still waters is a sight to behold, considered a manifestation of Lord Shiva.
A smaller, separate part of the lake with lukewarm water, believed to be the bathing place of Goddess Parvati. Traditionally, men bathe in the icy ‘Shiv Karotri’ and women in Gauri Kund.
The holy mace (‘Chhari Mubarak’) procession, starting from the Laxmi Narayan Temple in Chamba, is a significant part of the Manimahesh Yatra.
The journey to the lake is a challenging but rewarding trek through stunning Himalayan landscapes, with various routes offering different levels of difficulty.
Numerous legends are associated with the lake and the Kailash peak, adding to its mystical charm. It’s believed Lord Shiva created the lake after marrying Parvati, and the peak remains unconquered despite many attempts.
From Delhi (580 km, 12-14 hrs): Drive via NH44 → Pathankot → Chamba → Bharmour. From Shimla (250 km, 8-9 hrs): Take the scenic route via Rampur and Kullu. HRTC buses run daily from Delhi/Chandigarh to Chamba. Note: The last 65 km from Chamba to Bharmour has steep, narrow roads – SUVs recommended.
The closest major railhead is Pathankot Railway Station (150 km from Chamba). Direct trains like Jammu Mail and Himsagar Express connect from Delhi (8-10 hrs). From Pathankot, take a bus/taxi to Chamba (4 hrs), then another to Bharmour (3 hrs).
The nearest airport is Kangra Airport (Gaggal), located 200 km away (5-6 hour drive). Daily flights connect from Delhi (1 hr). From Kangra, hire a taxi via Palampur and Chamba to Bharmour (base for the trek).
